After Xingle's return from Sichuan, she managed to contact her Singaporean friend Phui Wah who extended her help by gathering her neighbours and friends to donate winter clothnings to teachers in Sichuan.

On 19th Oct 2008, friends and neighbours gathered at her place in Chaoyang. Besides donating clothes, they have kindly sponsored our postage fee too! ( A total of almost 2000RMB)

Phui Wah and friends have made that evening a very special one when everyone decided to put up a performance to thank everyone for their kindness.

As majority of her neighbours are non-local, we have a wonderful multi-cultural mini concert that night!

Friends and neighbours are able to enjoy the performance while having the delicious food that Phui Wah prepared!

We have collected a total of 90kg of clothes, its a very successful event that night!

"Hi, my name is Zhang Xin."

"My dream is to grow taller."

Standing in front of her teacher and classmates, at a height of 120cm, is Zhang Xin.

Zhang Xin is a primary five student at Sichuan province PengZhou Shi, Cao Ba Primary School. She had a simple dream. She dreams of growing taller. Already at the age of 1, Zhang Xin had lost the use of her leg due to belated treatment after a bicycle accident. Currently, she is in a precarious condition and in desperate need for medical care, so as to fulfill her dreams of growing taller. Being disabled, Zhang Xin had great difficulty trying to move through the ruins of the earthquake. If she choose to use the main road to travel home, she will not be able to cross the busy roads quick enough to avoid the vehicles. Furthermore, with frequent aftershocks of the earthquake, it is difficult for Zhang Xin to move quickly to escape. We really hope that someone will be able to help Zhang Xin, and not forsake this little girl.

Zhang Xin currently still need 10 years of medical care and 5 operations, the total medical cost totalling around 500,000 RMB. Living in a family of 5 and depending on a household income of 850RMB, Zhang Xin could not afford any of these. Thus we hope that through this blog entry, someone can lend a helping hand to her. Please allow her dream to be fulfilled.
倘若您有意愿帮助张鑫小朋友,请与我们联系envelopes_logistic@hotmail.com,我们将会邮寄张鑫目前的检查结果给您,谢谢。

“Envelops of Love” do not aim to collect donation for Zhang Xin, but we hope that any kind medical personnel could provide free medical care for her. If you wish to help her, please contact us at envelopes_logistic@hotmail.com. Thank You.

Lastly, we hope that everyone could get hope and inspiration from Zhang Xin essay titled “determination”.

From “Envelopes of Love” and the family members of Zhang Xin , we sincerely hope for your help. Thank you.

On the morning of 6th October 2008, we arrived at Yu Jiang Nan Primary School in Sichuan. The school was initially a 2 storey high building before the earthquake. When the tragedy happened, two primary 5 students were unable to escape and were buried alive. After the quake, the principal and teachers immediately ran towards the debris and dug out some of the students who were trapped using their bare hands.

A few days after the earthquake, Principal Xu started to source for assistance, hoping to rebuild the school in the shortest time possible. With the help from FuJian province, they were provided with a free temporary campus, which enabled the children to study in a safer environment.

The hardwork and effort from the principal and teachers moved us deeply and we really look upon their selflessness as a guide.

Due to persistent tremors, we felt sorry for these children who have to study in fear. We conducted a few foreign language lessons, and their diligence and hunger for knowledge served as a role model for all other children.

London Bridge Is Falling Down

Not only did we conduct lessons of different foreign languages , we also taught them the game of 'London Bridge Is Falling Down'. During the game, smiles took over their weary faces. We are glad that these children enjoyed our planned activities and we also surprised them with little gifts after the lessons.

(Right) The three of us with a volunteer from Sichuan. She is currently working outside the province but would still take the initiative to visit the teachers and students over there. Kudos to these volunteers who assisted the school in resuming it's operation in the shortest time possible. Their passion serve as a guide for us and we felt deeply touched by their selfless contributions.

Before departing, Principal Xu arranged the kids according to their level and took a picture with us for remembrance. We are grateful for their hospitality, and the smiles from the kids would be in our memory for a lifetime.

With this, the Envelopes of Love committee would like to express our utmost graditute to these noble and selfless teachers. May you all be safe and we look forward to meeting you again :)

Before & after departure

On 2nd October 2008, 3 members from the 'Envelopes Of Love' committee went on an tiring yet enriching 26 hours train ride to Cheng Du. They are Xing Le from Singapore, Ah Lan from Korea and Guan Fei from Indonesia.

This trip to Sichuan is not only to survey the living conditions, but also to take the chance to visit those children affected by the earthquake. One week before our departure, upon knowing our project, Mr Wang He, a China student currently studying in Canada decided to donate 500RMB to show support in our porject. Hence, our entire committee would like to express for graditute to Mr Wang He, and we have made use of this sum of money to get little gifts of thoughts to the children over there.

Thanks to Beijing Horizon Educational Centre, we will be visiting 2 schools. Other than surveying the conditions over there, we will also be giving those chidren there English, Korean and Indonesian Language lessons. Our beijing-based committee members made a number of preparations for the trip, and this includes lesson materials and basic necessities.

Bags filled with our love and anticipation.

A full day train ride couldn't undermine our excitment.

After 26 hours, we finally arrived at Cheng Du train station! The station was hanging with banners showing the unity of the Chinese in their earthquake relief mission. Although it's been 5 months after the earthquake took place, but we were so touched by the efforts of the people in rebuilding their homes and this indeed served as an motivation for us.
When one is in trouble, everyone else will help.
Play a part in rebuilding by ensuring smooth traffic.

We will blog more photos and thoughts for our trip soon, not only will we introduce the 2 primary schools, we would also introduce some of the volunteers helping in the earth quake affected zones!

Being able to work with juniors from our Alma mater, expanded our area of operations in helping the children of Sichuan. The committee members of Envelopes of Love not only feels a sense of gratitude from this, but found new enthusiasm , surrounded my a group of youthful and enthusiastic youths. Let us display our creativity and sense of compassion, overcome our own limits, to add value for self and the children of Sichuan, showing that selfless love once again.

The photo above shows a member of our finance committee, Cheng Kai , presenting our project. When the 512 earthquake occurred, Cheng Kai was in Beijing on a student exchange programme. Witnessing first hand, the strength and unity of the Chinese people and a series of of heart warming incidents in the disaster area, motivated Cheng kai to join the envelopes of love committee. That night, Cheng Kai not only shared the pictures that he took in China but also his thoughts and feelings at that point in time, allowing the students to have a greater understanding of the immediate aftermath of the earthquake.

Foreword

Sichuan experienced a major earthquake on 12 May 2008, resulting in devastating numbers of deaths, millions became homeless, and economic activities halted. When the earthquake occurred, many students were having lessons in schools, and it was unfortunate that their lives were cut short because they were unable to escape in time. This unexpected disaster brought the whole country together, with many external organizations and countries raising funds to help the victims of the quake.

“Envelopes of Love” surfaced, not only because we were touched by the actions of our people, but also because we understood the emotional scars left on the children due to the earthquake. After such a disaster, the bad memories will always be like a black cloud hanging over the heads of the children. Perhaps we as Singaporeans do not understand how they feel, since we're so privileged, but we can still do our part to help the children in Sichuan. No matter how small your effort may seem, your sincerity to help them is enough to make them feel happiness.

The purpose of our project is to provide emotional aid to children, such that when they are facing emotional scars and stress from the environment, they are able to receive a ray of hope from people in other countries, allowing them to feel that there are still people who sincerely care for them and want them to live well. The committee members in this project aim to send letters and cards starting from October 2008 to September 2009, at a monthly basis, with the help from Beijing Horizontal Educational Centre (BHEC). Thus, if you would like to contribute in any way to the children in Sichuan, please contact us through the methods below:

  • If you or your organisation would like to contribute by making the cards, please contact us via this email: envelopes_logistic@hotmail.com. After we have received your email, we will send you the additional information required about making the cards.
  • If your organisation would like to sponsor the shipping fees for the letters to Sichuan, please contact us via this email: envelopes_finance@hotmail.com. When we have received your email, we will send you a copy of our proposal and additional information needed.
Even if you are just able to contribute one card, we will welcome your contribution. We believe that as long as we work together, we can add in happiness into the lives of the children in Sichuan. The committee of "Envelopes of Love" would like to appeal to all of you, while you are living a comfortable life, please give a helping hand to the children in Sichuan by making use of your creativity to create a card for them.
